MISTRAL is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project aimed at accelerating battery innovation by transforming testing and validation processes across the European battery value chain. The project addresses key challenges associated with the time, cost, and complexity of conventional battery testing, which can delay the development and market introduction of safe, reliable, and competitive battery technologies. Bringing together partners from research, industry, and technology sectors, MISTRAL seeks to develop and demonstrate an integrated framework for accelerated multi-physical and virtual battery testing. Addressing different battery system levels, from cell to pack, as well as first-life, second-life, and stationary applications, the project combines advanced experimental techniques, Artificial Intelligence (AI), physics-based modelling, and Battery Digital Twins to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of battery validation. Through AI-assisted testing, predictive modelling, and advanced digital solutions, MISTRAL aims to significantly reduce testing time and costs while enhancing the assessment of battery ageing, reliability, and safety assessments. The project’s innovations will be demonstrated through three real-world use cases involving electric passenger vehicles, electric buses, and stationary energy storage systems. By supporting more efficient validation processes, traceable lifecycle information, and alignment with emerging European standards and Digital Battery Passport requirements, MISTRAL contributes to strengthening the competitiveness, sustainability, and technological leadership of Europe’s battery industry.
Main objectives
MISTRAL aims to transform battery testing and validation through innovative methodologies, advanced modelling, and digital technologies. Its main objectives are to:
- Accelerate Battery Testing and Validation: Reduce testing time, experimental effort, and development costs through integrated physical and virtual testing approaches.
- Advance AI-Driven Testing and Predictive Modelling: Leverage artificial intelligence, early-life battery characterisation, and advanced simulation techniques to optimise experimental design and improve predictions of battery ageing, performance, and lifetime.
- Enhance Battery Safety and Reliability Assessment: Develop and validate multi-physics models and advanced testing methodologies to assess battery behaviour, identify safety risks, and support reliable safety classification from cell to pack level.
- Develop Adaptive Battery Digital Twins: Combine experimental data, predictive models, and digital technologies to enable more efficient, accurate, and scalable battery validation across different applications.
- Demonstrate Industrial Applicability: Validate MISTRAL’s solutions at cell, module, and system levels through three real-world use cases involving electric passenger vehicles, electric buses, and stationary energy storage systems, supporting their transferability and industrial adoption.
- Support Standardisation and Lifecycle Transparency: Contribute to European battery testing and safety standards while improving the quality, traceability, and usability of data supporting the Digital Battery Passport and lifecycle decision-making.
- Strengthen European Competitiveness and Sustainability: Support the development and market introduction of safer and more reliable battery technologies while assessing the economic and environmental viability of innovative validation approaches across the European battery value chain.
ITML role in the project
ITML plays a key role in MISTRAL as a technology partner, leading the development and integration of the project’s Holistic Digital Platform, which will provide a unified digital environment for battery data management, advanced modelling, and AI-driven testing workflows.
Building on its expertise in software engineering, data integration, and digital infrastructure, ITML will contribute to:
- Holistic Digital Platform Development: Design, develop, and deploy an integrated digital platform connecting the project’s experimental, simulation, and AI-based solutions.
- Data Integration and Interoperability: Enable the ingestion, harmonisation, and management of heterogeneous battery data, supporting FAIR data principles, traceability, and seamless information exchange.
- Integration of Models and AI Services: Facilitate the integration and execution of predictive models, Battery Digital Twins, and Agentic AI services within a unified digital environment.
- Digital Infrastructure and Platform Services: Provide secure, scalable, and interoperable platform services, enabling automated testing workflows and facilitating access to selected project results and digital resources.
Through these activities, ITML will support the establishment of the digital foundation of MISTRAL, enabling the effective integration of its technological innovations and supporting more efficient, data-driven battery testing and validation.
